Why this tea

  1. 01

    The 1993 is the peel

The chenpi in this cake has been aging for more than three decades. The tea underneath it has eight years of its own.

  2. 02

A rare find from a puerh mountain

White tea off Yibang's old small-leaf trees doesn't turn up often. A fuller, fruitier cup than our Fuding whites.

  3. 03

    Deep citrus, not bright citrus

Old chenpi loses the sharpness of fresh peel and keeps the warmth, so the citrus supports the white instead of covering it.

What is 1993 Orange Peel White Tea?

The year on the label belongs to the peel, not the tea. This is a compressed cake of 2018 white tea from Yibang, one of Yunnan's six ancient tea mountains. The orange peel pressed through it is chenpi, a staple aged ingredient in southern China, and this peel has been drying and mellowing since 1993. It's older than any tea we have.

Every other white we carry comes from Fuding, in Fujian. This one comes off Yibang's old small-leaf trees, the mountain's specialty in a province of big-leaf tea. Eight years in, the leaf has settled into the dried-fruit sweetness that aged whites move toward.

Three decades of aging take the sharpness out of citrus and leave the warmth. The white leads with honey, the chenpi comes in behind it, and the two settle into each other by the second steep. Deep gold in the cup.

We found this cake in March 2026, on a return trip to Yunnan. We'd come back for reds and puerh, which is what everyone goes to Yibang for. A white tea pressed with thirty-year-old peel was not on the list.

We already knew citrus and tea work together. Our tangerine shou is built on that pairing, and dark, earthy shou has the weight to stand up to fruit. White tea is a quieter leaf, and we expected the peel to walk all over it, but it never did. The age is what holds the blend together: 1993 chenpi doesn't shout the way young peel does, so the white stays present underneath it, and the citrus reads as warmth instead of flavouring.

Aging & Storage

Both the tea and the peel keep aging. The white deepens toward dried fruit, and the chenpi becomes more valued as the years add up.

Keep the cake in its sealed wrapper, in a cool dark cupboard, away from heat, light, and anything strong-smelling.

Sourced Direct

Direct from the farm

Bought in person from the farmer who made it, on a yearly sourcing trip to China.

Tasted before bought

We taste every lot ourselves before we buy, often against alternates from the same village.

Small lots, single origin

Every tea is named by its village, farmer, and harvest year. Never a warehouse blend.
